LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has stated that democracy is the best system of government and the right to rule belongs only to the people, while emphasizing the need to avoid bitterness in politics.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with party leader Nawaz Sharif at Jati Umra during his stay in Lahore. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar were also present on the occasion.

Nawaz Sharif said that civility is essential in politics and one should avoid bitterness. He stated that differences of opinion should exist in politics but should not be turned into personal ego.

It is noteworthy that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has recently begun a series of regular meetings with party MPAs to directly listen to their issues and public grievances. According to sources, the Chief Minister of Punjab has adopted a merit-based policy since assuming office to prevent political interference in the bureaucracy and police .

The Punjab government maintains that all appointments are now being made strictly on merit, leaving no room for political influence by ruling party members or others . However, some MPAs express a desire to encourage Tehsildars and police officers to assist them in their constituencies so they can provide better services to their voters .
